02 · Understanding GBT
Even with careful home care, some plaque can remain between teeth and along the gumline. GBT helps identify and clean these areas systematically.
GBT, Guided Biofilm Therapy, is a professional dental hygiene protocol focused on controlling biofilm: a thin bacterial plaque that is not always visible in the mirror. Before cleaning, the dentist reveals it with a special disclosing agent.
You will also see your own plaque map and understand what to change in your home care, with clear guidance and no blame.
The full protocol. Examination, disclosure, home care instruction, cleaning, monitoring and a visit schedule. Eight connected stages.
Biofilm and staining. Air, water and fine powder remove soft plaque and external tooth staining.
Tartar. An ultrasonic instrument removes hard deposits where present. It is used when indicated.
03 · How the procedure works
Each stage has its own purpose. The dentist considers sensitivity, gum condition, braces and restorations. Click a stage to learn more.
We discuss your symptoms and health, assess teeth, gums and restorations, and determine what care is needed at this visit.
We apply a disclosing agent to make plaque visible. The dentist sees areas to clean, and you see where to pay more attention at home.
We show you how to clean missed areas and help choose a toothbrush and interdental products that are comfortable for you.
We remove biofilm and surface staining with a stream of air, water and powder. Settings are chosen for your sensitivity and the surface being treated.
When needed, we use a special nozzle to treat biofilm in periodontal pockets. The dentist determines whether it is appropriate after examination.
We use ultrasound when hard deposits are present. It treats areas with tartar; soft plaque alone does not require this stage.
We check for remaining biofilm and deposits and refine areas when needed. At White Art, we use a microscope for extra visual monitoring.
We determine the right interval between procedures. It depends on gum condition, home care, deposits and prescribed treatment.
PERIOFLOW and PIEZON are used when indicated. For gum disease, subgingival treatment may require a separate treatment plan.

04 · Attention to detail
Details matter at the gumline and beside restorations. Magnification helps the dentist see the working area and monitor cleaning.
The microscope provides extra monitoring at White Art and complements the eight GBT stages.
I would like this care →05 · Gum health
Regular biofilm removal and daily care help control gum inflammation. Professional dental hygiene is therefore needed even when teeth look clean.
Tell your dentist. An examination helps identify the cause and determine whether cleaning is sufficient or periodontal care is needed.
Dental hygiene supports plaque control, and regular examinations help detect changes early. The dentist will choose a visit interval based on your home care and risk factors.
For gingivitis, professional cleaning and improved home care often form the basis of treatment. Suspected periodontitis requires an examination and a separate plan.
Supportive visits help maintain the treatment result. They include tissue assessment, home care monitoring and deposit removal when indicated. GBT can be part of this programme.
After periodontitis treatment, EFP recommends individual supportive care intervals of 3–12 months. Follow the schedule set by your periodontist.
The dentist prescribes these services when indicated. A single hygiene procedure does not replace comprehensive periodontitis treatment.
06 · After the procedure
The main recommendations after professional teeth cleaning are here. Your dentist will add advice based on the procedure, anaesthesia and products applied.
EMS patient recommendations after GBT advise a wait of about an hour before eating and drinking. If anaesthesia was used, avoid food and hot drinks while numbness remains. After protective coatings, follow the waiting time your dentist specifies.
The wait of about an hour also applies to coffee, tea, wine and strongly coloured foods. Further restrictions depend on the procedure and products applied. Ask before leaving the clinic.
Sensitivity can temporarily increase after deposit removal, especially below the gumline. Choose a comfortable food and drink temperature and follow home care advice. Contact the clinic if pain is severe, worsens or does not settle.
Continue regular gentle care as advised by your dentist: brush twice daily and clean between teeth with suitable products. Follow any special instructions given after subgingival treatment.
Smoking increases the risk of periodontal disease. A break after the procedure does not remove this risk. Discuss stopping smoking and care appropriate for your gum condition with your dentist.
07 · Before booking
Pain, tartar, visit frequency and restoration care: answers to common questions when choosing professional dental hygiene.
Your experience depends on tooth sensitivity, gum condition and the amount of deposits. Tell your dentist if previous cleaning was uncomfortable: they can adjust settings and discuss pain relief when needed. You can ask for a pause during the procedure.
The dentist determines the suitable interval after examination. It depends on plaque and tartar build-up, gum condition, home care, smoking, braces and implants. For periodontitis, follow your prescribed supportive therapy schedule.
Duration depends on deposits, sensitivity, gum condition and dental appliances. When booking, the administrator will tell you the time allocated to your programme. The dentist confirms the scope of work after examination.
GBT is the full protocol. AIRFLOW and PIEZON are tools for different tasks within it. AIRFLOW treats biofilm and surface staining; ultrasonic PIEZON treats tartar. The dentist chooses the stages needed after examination.
A toothbrush removes soft plaque, but established tartar requires professional removal. Do not try to scrape it off yourself: this can injure the gums and tooth surface. White Art uses PIEZON for hard deposits when indicated.
After surface staining is removed, teeth may look lighter and cleaner. Hygiene restores the natural shade but does not change the natural tooth colour as whitening does. If you want a lighter shade, discuss it at your appointment.
Yes. These appliances and restorations require attentive care. Ortho Care is available for braces, aligners and retainers; Veneer Care for veneers, crowns and implants. If you have several types, the dentist will help choose a programme after examination.
When booking, tell us about medical conditions, allergies, medications and previous reactions to dental procedures. Do not stop prescribed medication yourself. If you have individual restrictions or preparation is needed, the clinic will explain before your visit.
